Summary

It was Easter Sunday and the SuperHands were playing in their first ever tournament. In fact it was the first time we’d ever played a competitive game (because “friendlies don’t count”, according to Rob Lee), so it was with a mix of excitement, anticipation and a little apprehension that Narinder, Jenny, Ali, Fliss, Lesley-Anne, Olivier, Colin, Rob, Dave Dunkan, Doug and Fran (in a supporting role) arrived at Peffermill Playing Fields in the morning sunshine.

The first game was against Sixpack. It quickly became apparent that the hosts knew their stuff as they took us apart with their well executed line attack. The SuperHands put up a spirited defence, squeezing alternately left and right as we had trained in the dark winter evenings at Inverleith, however it wasn’t enough to prevent a convincing win by a team that contained several Scotland Squad members.

Next up was Go Commando, a team of players from Glasgow and Stirling. They played a less structured game but had lots of skill and speed and again the touchdowns began to mount up. However, the SuperHands were better organised than in the first game and managed to get their threes driving pattern working more effectively.

The third game was against a team of miscellaneous players called the TopGunners. Increasing in confidence with every game and with some great pre-game motivational chat from Captain Ali, the SuperHands improved driving and occasional dump and splits started to open up scoring opportunities and in the end we shot the TopGunners down in flames. It was our first ever victory and we were elated.

This put us third in our group, and the slightly unusual tournament format meant that we had to play the winners of the other group which were the Bareback Riders. Again this team contained a number of Scotland players, however the SuperHands new found confidence held them to only one score at half time. In the end though the pace and skill was too much and the Bareback Riders won by a decent margin.

The playoff was a shootout round against a team called the Glasgow Lions. They won in the end, however they were sufficiently impressed to invite us to play in the beginners’ tournament they were organising a few weeks later.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and a big night out ensued at which Captain Ali awarded the slightly worse for wear MVP cup to the slightly worse for wear Lesley-Anne.
